[July 2013- Site under construction]
I’m Nicole and Three By Sea is my little stretch of the blogosphere beach. Over the last couple of years, this blog has stalled a bit, but there are a few things about me and this blog that never change:
1. I like things SIMPLE– And sometimes simple is code for “lazy” or “impatient”. I like good food, but I don’t like to spend hours in the kitchen. I’m artistic and crafty, but I lack the patience for labor intensive mediums or methods. Having a relaxing tidy home is important to me, but I don’t want to spend my days cleaning or dusting a bunch of crap. I’m a fan of organizing, purging, and minimizing. As the mom of a five-year-old who is returning to teaching this fall (me, not the kiddo-I was a high school teacher and now am moving to preschool), when it comes to kids, simplifying routines, properly planning & organizing things, etc. definitely makes life simpler.
2. I like things CREATIVE– While I have an art degree, I don’t believe creativity is tied strictly to artistic ability. Everybody’s got a little creative in them, and like any other skill (because creativity IS a skill), you gotta practice it to get better. Creativity is about learning to tune in more to the world around you to consider and discover new approaches and solutions to problems, and finding ways to express your unique viewpoint. It doesn’t have to be as hokey as it sounds, I promise. Developing creativity can be fun and playful, as well as have some very practical purposes, from maintaining your sanity at work, decorating on a budget, preventing toddler meltdowns, or creating dinner with the contents of your fridge.
3. I like things AMUSING– Life is short and I want to spend as many days as I can sharing laughs, amusing myself and having fun with others. I’m forever discovering things that amuse me or finding ways to entertain myself and others. My philosophy is that “only boring people are bored.” The world (and the internet) is a big place, and if you’re bored, you’re not paying enough attention.
THINGS THAT INSPIRE ME AND INFLUENCE MY WORK
Growing up in Kansas during the 70s & 80s, COLOR!, a desire for order and simplicity, a pathological need to laugh, standup comedians, a love of coastal living and Mid-Century Modern ANYTHING, ocean and shore life, television, mixes of hand drawn and digital elements, people with a wicked sense of humor, the absurd/ridiculous/annoying things in life and whatever my son’s into this week.
