I’m a bit of a magazine junkie. I tell myself I don’t have time for them, let subscriptions run out, then overpay at the grocery store or Barnes and Nobles buying “just this issue” for six months, until I finally give in and renew the damn subscriptions.
Here are my current loves:
And yes, many are available on my Nook, but I like thumbing, not finger scrolling, through my magazines. I like bending page corners of recipes, home design inspiration, project ideas, and words or phrases that catch my attention. Later, when a stack of magazines has accrued and I have lots of mindless stuff to watch on the DVR, I’ll give the magazines once last thumb through and cut out all those bits I marked as keepers.
All the bits have folders and sketchbooks they end up in, except the words and phrases. I’ve been collecting them for a few years, certain they held a purpose, a project idea, or a story to tell.
One of the project ideas I recently came up with is Magazine Mantras. Below is this week’s Magazine Mantra.
This is the start of a little experiment, to see what these words mean for me and for you. Each Monday I’ll post a photo with three of these words and phrases, randomly chosen from the box lid I keep them in. Maybe I’ll have my Little Dude help pick them. Take these words as you will- thoughts to guide you, a sort of horoscope for the week or as some psychic message for you to interpret accordingly. Pick one or all of them, use them however they speak to you. (After all, don’t we tend to filter most messages we receive, choosing which parts we want to pay attention to?)
Many of the words and phrases I cut out are from ads, although some are article titles and headers. At any rate, they’re all meant to grab your attention, evoke a feeling, and create a call to action. It’s interesting to me what ideas are presented through various media, how they’re presented and what can happen to them when they’re taken out of context. I suspect some weeks the mantras will be more amusing and others more serious…then again, maybe it all goes back to each individual’s interpretation. This week’s “take time for you/chill out/make a splash” could easily be a sign to blow off this week and go jump in my pool before cooler weather arrives. Or maybe I’m supposed to go “wow!” everyone, then kick back and reap the rewards of it afterwards.
So, if you feeling like sharing your interpretation of this week’s Magazine Mantra or thoughts on this project, leave me a comment!
