I woke up this morning, ideas percolating, prepared to write a blog post.
Then I actually sat down to do it and realized that I didn’t really like any of those ideas. Not today anyways.
So I did what most of us do when we’re stuck on something-
AVOID THE PROBLEM.
Translation: I did four loads of laundry and wandered the internet.
And found this-
(It’s only five minutes long, Jessi’s funny and engaging, so go on, click it!)
I loved this video, though ironically enough, not many of Jessi’s outfits. And while I disagree with her stance on gold sequins, I do agree with Jessi on this issue:
Just be who you are. If you are surrounding yourself with the right people, they will not only get it, they’ll appreciate it.
As I work to shift the focus of Three By Sea and grow as a creative entrepreneur, I find more truth in that statement each day.
The other great thing about this video was the “subtle” message it sent me.
If you look behind Jessi, you see the TED background with this year’s theme:
The Rediscovery of WONDER
There was my blog post topic.
As I was watching this video, doodling little doodads, it occurred to me that I was wondering about A LOT of stuff right at that moment. Stuff like:
What would happen if I did X to this doodle?
What would it look like if I made a bunch of them & created some sort of flower pattern from it?
Really, what was Jessi thinking with those gold sequins?
How awesome would it be to give a TED talk?
What would I talk about?
What would I wear? (obviously not gold sequins)
Why do Sharpie markers smell like they do?
And this was in the span of 30 seconds.
These days I’ve been thinking a lot about creativity- its origins, its benefits, how humor enhances it, how to help folks find theirs, etc. Seeing that word “WONDER” behind Jessi and realizing how much I wondered about makes me think that maybe, just maybe,
CREATIVITY BEGINS IN WONDER.
Without wonder, there’s no creation, no exploration, no innovation. Nothing is new, nothing is different, the status quo remains in effect. Your life continues on as before, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was, same as it ever was…
MY CHALLENGE TO YOU-
Right now, and over the next few days, take notes and write down the things you wonder about. Big questions, little questions, serious stuff, secret things, shallow, deep, humorous mind wanderings…whatever. Don’t judge the questions or thoughts, just start noticing what you wonder about. Can you can think of 10 things right now. What about 100 by the end of the weekend?
Once you have a significant list, read through it and see if any patterns jump out you. Anything you wish you wondered more or less about? Does having this list of questions give you any ideas that you might want to act on?
We’ll talk more later…feel free to leave a comment about any of this; I’d love to hear your thoughts.
