Lately my head is spinning with ideas for Three By Sea. I’m taking Kelly Rae Robert’s e-course, and this weekend I began reading Tara Gentile’s latest ebook, both of which deal specifically with growing your creative business. I’m loving it all and can’t wait to incorporate these ideas into my business and share new things with you. But I also feel the need to make sure I’m not overlooking the basis of my creative business…
My actual creative output.
Surface design is an avenue that I intend to pursue more actively, which means I need to get back to creating new patterns and designs on a regular basis. (By surface design, I mean designs and patterns that can be used for fabrics & upholstery, paper products, housewares…any surface you can alter with a motif, design, or pattern!) I need to get back to making and, more importantly, putting it out there. So here’s my idea…
100 Surface Designs in 100 (Week)Days.
The idea was inspired by my new blog crush, Kelly Diels. (Thanks, Tara, for “introducing” me to Kelly- love her!) Kelly recently wrote a post about Deliberate Practice and a project she’s participating in that involves that involves a consistent yoga practice and daily writing goal for 21 days.
I dig the idea and I love what Kelly gave as her reasons for doing the project:
Because writing 800 words a day whether I “feel like it” or not is deliberate practice. It is a big eff you to my contrary, oft-absent muse.
Because I’ve found the more I talk to my body, live in my body and move my body, the more I can create. The more I live in my head and consider my body as merely the vehicle that gets my gorgeous brain around, the more my brain swells up, gets high and mighty, and writes all kinds of bullshit.
True dat, sister.
So I’m off to create a design or pattern each weekday until I hit 100. I want to build my drawing and Illustrator skills, as well as finally get around to learning Photoshop, so putting myself in a routine of deliberate practice is bound to do something for me, right? I sure as hell can’t get worse.
I’m interested and excited to see what my 100 designs/patterns will look like and the course they’ll take. I’m sure some will suck, but often the crappy ones end up being the jumping off point for something better. We’ll see. I’ll post them so you can follow along and offer up comments.
And while I’m doing that, I’m also bringing back some yoga or living room dancing back into my daily routine. Because Kelly was right, moving your body does do wonders for your mind. Truth be told, I’m a lazy ass when it comes to exercising, but I do enjoy the act of moving and stretching my body and how I feel mentally afterwards. So there will be no exercising here, just yoga and dancing. 🙂
Any skill or talent you want to improve upon? What would devoting the next 21 days or 100 weekdays to deliberating practicing it do for you?
Be back soon with today’s design…
