Jena of Modish has an amazing new blog, Modish Biz Tips. It's aimed at creative types and addresses the business side of creativity. One of her new features is a Monthly Goal Meet Up. You post your business goals for the month on your blog, and then link to Jena's blog for others to see. By broadcasting your goals to the world, you're more compelled to follow through with them. I also like the idea of everyone posting on Jena's blog, as it provides a sense of camaraderie that is lacking when you work at home. Knowing others are working to complete their goals gives me additional encouragement to complete mine.
Here's my list for the month. My first full-time job is taking care of Jack, but I think this list is realistic.
1. Participate in Problogger's 31 Days to a Better Blog
2. Turn two dozen flour sack towels into tea towels and bags for my Etsy shop
3. Update my Typelists on my blog
4. Create at least two new stationery designs for my shop
5. Carve at least one new printing block
6. Work on my 'Elle' designs
7. Rework my logo and banner
So we'll see how it goes. If I complete everything, I'll have lots of great things for sale in my shop soon, which excites me, so stay tuned!
I'm also considering posting weekly updates, as a way to monitor my progress and ensure I stay focused on my goals. I tend to get distracted by new ideas that pop up in my head. Frank refers to it as my own "Stickers!!!" complex, a reference to a former student of mine who was easily distracted. In the midst of a discussion one day about focusing if she was going to complete her project on time, she bursts out, "Stickers!!", snatches up a page of stickers laying on my desk and begins playing with them. Needless to say, she didn't get her project completed on time! So no "Stickers!!" moments for me this month- if I get an idea, I plan to write it in my notebook and save it for next month's goals. Wish me luck!
